RESEARCH
ON SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE
SOD is a metal-containing antioxidant enzyme that reduces potentially harmful free radicals of oxygen formed during normal metabolic cell processes to oxygen and hydrogen peroxide -- abbreviation SOD. Therefore SOD reduces oxidative stress and can play a key role in moderating the ageing process.
Single point mutations in SOD are associated with the development of a form of motor neuron disease. SOD is used to treat arthritis and other joint disorders, prevent side effects of cancer treatment, prostate problems, and Peyronie's disease. It is also used as an antioxidant. SOD is sometimes used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), prevent injury to transplant organs during surgery, and to prevent lung problems in premature infants
